2009 - IN BRIEF
Rising dairy cow prices fuelled by a shortage of cattle on the market was a feature of the trade in 2009. The number of dairy farmers is probably decreasing, but with dairy units continuing to increase in size, demand is at present outstripping supply, and despite many lorry loads of heifers coming in from the continent, this situation will remain in the immediate future.
The year saw the centenary celebrations for Holstein UK as well as the 25th Anniversary of the Norton & Brooksbank partnership and at a special Centenary Sale at the National Holstein Show, the average obtained of £7,389 per head was the highest for a Holstein Sale in Europe last year. We conducted dispersal sales in many parts of England and Wales, including the famous Deehaven herd, as well as the usual monthly Lancaster Dairy Sales of which the 600th event in January was among the most successful in their history. Another highlight was the dispersal over 2 days in October on farm near Hungerford, Berkshire of the Wansdyke herd. 650 head of cattle were sold to breeders and commercial producers throughout the country.

Although the usual dispersal and collective sales will take place, two very special sales are planned this spring which should both cause more than usual interest among breeders.
On April 14th, Wills Bros Ltd, are having the first home sale from their noted WILLSBRO herd. In recent years they have invested heavily in genetics from the world’s leading cow families and have also won leading awards at the major shows the opportunity to buy into these lines should be irresistible. Over 200 head of all ages including superbly bred bulls will sell on the Royal Cornwall Showground and will be preceded on the previous day by an opportunity to visit the impressive Pawton dairy complex, where over 1,000 cows comprise the Willsbro milking herd.
On April 27th & 28th a two day sale will see the dispersal of the famous WEETON herd in Lancashire. Messrs Loftus’s herd has long been renowned as one of the finest in the country, and great cow families have once again been the cornerstone of its success. Numerous Ex & VG cows and their offspring will be selling and again the dispersal of a herd of this calibre is one that rarely arises.
The SHOWCASE SALES in Bristol have been a source of top females from leading breeders, and several future show winners and valuable brood cows have come from them. This year’s event will be on TUESDAY JUNE 8th and early entries are invited to achieve maximum publicity.
